The striking LNER apple green liveried Class A1 Flying Scotsman helps to recreate those wonderful days of train travel in the 1930s when the two great rivals, London North Eastern Railway and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway vied for the lucrative passenger traffic between London and Scotland. All the RailRoad models are fitted with the standard Hornby hook and bar type couplings and will therefore easily couple to those locomotives and rolling stock in both the standard Hornby and Thomas & Friends ranges. HORNBY RAILWAYS R2687 In 1988 Australia celebrated its two hundredth anniversary and part of their celebrations included a visit from the World famous steam locomotive. Flying Scotsman ned at that time by Sir William McAlpine. During the visit Scotsman ed many things but above all the locomotive established a new record by steaming 442 miles (711 km) from Parks to Broken Hill without stopping making this journey the longest non-stop run ever recorded by a steam locomotive. In view of this and the anniversary of the Bicentennial Celebrations the Hornby Flying Scotsman has been produced as a limited edition of 1000 models incorporating several features that could be seen on the locomotive as it travelled across Australia. Hornby Amazingly this beautiful 00 gauge model of the world's most famous steam locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, is driven by a real steam engine - NOT electric motors. Water is heated in the tender-mounted boiler (powered by electricity from the track) supplying steam to a fantastic miniaturised working steam engine up front. It is possible to vary the speed and drive the locomotive in forward or reverse. The set (the box is a work of art in itself!) includes everything you need to get going: from the engine, control/transformer units and track (a loop measuring 8'x3'6) to lubricating oil, gloves and maintenance tools. It will run for about 20 minutes on one filling of water. The detailing is incredible, from the sprung buffers to the dead man's handle speed control - this product is superb. Engine/tender combined length 12. PLEASE NOTE: Live Steam Flying Scotsman is compatible with all 00 gauge Hornby rolling stock (not included) and track, but must run on its own route powered by the transformer supplied (it uses a different voltage to standard engines).
